Thank you so much - it wasn't necessarily conscious, but I think you hit the nail on the head with the significance of the bread and butter. There are few things nicer than freshly-baked bread spread with really good butter. It's sad to me that these kids are going to have their memories of what should have been something really nice be tainted this way.
